These are just a few of the many faces we encountered when Briarcliff Animal Foundation brought medical relief supplies to the emergency animal shelter in Jackson, Mississippi.

As animals enter the shelter they are bathed and go through triage. Each animal is vaccinated, dewormed and given various medical treatment in order to reduce the risk of disease spreading through the shelter.

These sweet dogs are the lucky ones to have reached a shelter that is receiving supplies from BAF.

Briarcliff Animal Foundation brings medical supply relief to Mississippi animals

September 8, 2005
BAF volunteer veterinarian, Dr. Peter Muller, loads the plane for the flight to Jackson, Mississippi and Hammond, Louisiana. Much needed medical supplies include vaccines, deworming medication, IV fluids, antibiotics, bandages, syringes, etc. Crates are also loaded and will hold 14 dachshund dogs that will be rescued from a devastated area.

The shelter in Jackson is located at the state fairgrounds. Hundreds of animals are held in pens in an outdoor pavilion like structure. Many long haired animals are shaved in order to prevent heat stroke. One pavilion houses animals that have owners staying in a nearby human shelter. Owners stop by to visit their pets and walk them. The 2nd pavilion holds many sick animals that have dysentery due to exposure to contaminated water.

Dr. Muller meets with Dr. Ann Leche-Hollis, the volunteer vet overseeing the shelter. Dr. Ann explains that 2 medical supply trucks did not make it to her shelter. One was held up at gun point and the other didn't make it for other reasons. She is in immediate need of more medical supplies. She is expecting 40 horses that are traumatized, dehydrated, and emaciated. She needs 4o lb. bags of IV fluids to treat these horses.
